Nigerian forward, Kelechi Iheanacho, is thrilled to have opened his goal account with LaLiga side Sevilla.
Kelechi Iheanacho made an immediate impact for Sevilla, scoring twice in their commanding 3-0 victory over Las Rozas CF in the Copa del Rey's opening round at Estadio Navalcarbón. The 28-year-old Nigerian striker, making his Copa debut for Sevilla under head coach GarcÃa Pimienta, seized his chance to shine, playing a pivotal role in securing Sevilla's spot in the next round.
Sevilla took an early lead when Las Rozas’ Luis Méndez turned the ball into his own net. Iheanacho doubled the lead around the hour mark, finishing off a smart assist from Juan Sánchez to score his first goal for Sevilla. He struck again in the 79th minute, capitalizing on a deflected shot from Gerard Fernández to seal the win.
This memorable cup debut adds to Iheanacho's impressive record of scoring in domestic cup openers. He previously scored in his first FA Cup and League Cup games with Manchester City, and in his first Community Shield match for Leicester City in August 2021.
In his post-match statement via Sevilla’s media team, Iheanacho expressed his joy: “I’m very happy to score my first goals for this club. Obviously, I haven’t had many opportunities, but I got one now, and I showed what I can do by scoring two goals. Thanks to the fans for their support, and to my teammates and coaches for helping me as well.”
Wearing the number 9 jersey, Iheanacho hopes for more goals and ambitions for Sevilla in La Liga. “Hopefully, there are more goals to come, and hopefully, Sevilla will be in the top six of La Liga by the end of the season.”
Looking ahead, Iheanacho is eager for Sevilla's La Liga clash against Real Sociedad on November 3 at Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium. He added, “I will be really happy to play in our stadium again. We have amazing fans, and they always support the team no matter what. Hopefully, I get a chance to play there, and hopefully, they will come out, support the team, and we win the game.”
Iheanacho’s strong debut in the Copa del Rey suggests he’s poised to make a significant mark in Spain, with Sevilla fans hopeful his goalscoring prowess will aid in their La Liga campaign.
